Grants and Fellowships

While the University’s funding support for doctoral students, as announced in October 2019, includes tuition, a stipend, and health insurance, students should continue to pursue external grants and fellowships, as such awards are often prestigious and distinguish a student’s academic achievements, especially important as students near graduation and begin seeking jobs. 

The University is a central resource for financial support, mainly in the form of scholarships and fellowships as well as educational loans and employment. In the first few years of study, many students seek supplementary fellowship support from internal and external competitions, such as National Science Foundation, Ford, and Title VI FLAS fellowships. The Division combines such awards with University support, to a stipend level greater than either fellowship alone, subject to a cap. In this combination, the Division may reduce or entirely replace the divisional stipend with the new fellowship, depending on the award level.
