Divisional Accolades

To date:

Twenty-six Divisional faculty members have received the Nobel Prize, the most of any Division or school at the University of Chicago.

Fifty-six current Division faculty have been named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, most recently including Karen Knorr Cetina in 2021 and Esteban Rossi-Hansberg in 2022.

Demonstrating the broad intellectual reach of the faculty of the Division, three (3) have received the National Medal of Science, six have received the National Humanities Medal, and one has received the National Medal of the Arts.

Six Divisional faculty members have been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Division has celebrated the election of eight faculty members to the National Academy of Sciences and one to the National Academy of Medicine.

Social Sciences faculty have earned nine MacArthur Fellowships, most recently Tara Zahra in 2014.

Will Howell, the Sydney Stein Professor in American Politics and Chair of the Department of Political Science, was named a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow.

Elisabeth Clemens, the William Rainey Harper Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Sociology, won the 2023 UChicago Press Gordon J. Laing Award for her book, Civic Gifts: Voluntarism and the Making of the American Nation-State.

Dipesh Chakrabarty, the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History, South Asian Language and Civilizations, and the College, was elected to the British Academy 2023.

American Academy of Arts & Sciences – 2023 Elected Fellows include:

  • Magne Mogstad, the Gary Becker Distinguished Service Professor, Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics.
  • Salikoko Mufwene, Edward Carson Waller Distinguished Service Professor, Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity and Department of Linguistics.
  • Shigehiro Oishi, the Marshall Field IV Professor, Department of Psychology.

Manasi Deshpande, Associate Professor in the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics, was named a 2023 Sloan Research Fellow.

School of Social Science Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) – Selected Members for 2023-2024

  • Darryl Li, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology
  • Natacha Nsabimana, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology

Kathryn Takabvirwa, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology, was recognized in the 2023 American Council of Learned Societies.

Chiara Galli, Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Human Development, was named a 2023-2024 ABF/JPB Foundation Access to Justice Scholar.

Gabe Winant, Assistant Professor in the Department of History, and Rene Flores, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, were awarded a fellowship with the 2023-2024 Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.

James Lindley Wilson, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, is a 2023-2024 Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Faculty Fellow at Princeton University.

Aaron Jakes, Assistant Professor in History was awarded a NEH Public Scholars Fellowship.
