Masters Programs
International Relations (CIR)
The Committee on International Relations, founded in 1928, is the nation’s oldest graduate program in international affairs. Combining rigorous core instruction with an interdisciplinary curriculum, CIR allows students to explore the complexities of international relations and interact with world-class faculty, scholars and professionals. Students develop depth of expertise by specializing in two fields of study and produce an MA thesis, which constitutes an original piece of research. Enrolled in a program that champions the collaborative production of cutting-edge analytical work, students emerge as intellectual leaders in all fields of international theory and practice. CIR offers a one-year MA program as well as dual and joint degree programs with the Booth School of Business, the Law School and the Harris School of Public Policy.
Computational Social Sciences (MACSS)
Social scientists increasingly have access to data sets of unparalleled scope and complexity. New technologies have made the collection of that data - by governments, private companies, or innovative researchers - possible. Advances in computer science and statistics have allowed for inferential, simulated, and visual analyses that are now being incorporated into faculty research. With access to the full resources and faculty of the University of Chicago, in a small cohort that is faculty-mentored and assisted by doctoral “preceptors,” students in this two-year program are trained as a colleague and contributor for the next great wave of social science research.
Middle Eastern Studies
The Center administers interdisciplinary Master’s degree programs featuring a core language and area studies curriculum supplemented by coursework from across the University’s divisions and professional schools. The two-year program plan enables students to benefit from the University’s singularly intensive approach to language pedagogy. Students work closely with faculty in a wide range of fields, including anthropology, political science, Islamic studies, literature, public policy, economics and business, history, theology, and philosophy. MA program alumni are successful in many professional fields and in gaining admission to top doctoral programs.
Social Sciences (MAPSS)
The MA Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS) is an intense, intellectually transformative one-year program offering extraordinary access to the faculty and resources of a world-class research University. Students concentrate in anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, or in interdisciplinary research. They take nine graduate courses, selected from all UChicago departments and professional schools and work directly with UChicago faculty on the MA thesis.
